The incident, however, came to light after a video of the incident went viral on social media. In the video, some players were seen trying to save themselves as the players hurled chairs at each other.
Taking a serious cognizance of the incident, the IIT-K authorities have disqualified both the teams for further participation in the event.
However, the reason behind the clash has not been known yet.
“It has come to fore that an incident of altercation occurred between teams from two participating institutes during Udghosh’23, the annual sports festival at IIT Kanpur. This is strictly against the ethics of the festival and an improper showcase of sportsmanship. A strict action has already been taken in this regard and the concerned teams have been banned from further participation,” the institute said in an official statement.

Without naming the teams or the participating institutes, IIT-Kanpur said, “The concerned institutions have also been intimated and advised to take appropriate action at their end to avoid any such future incidents.”
“We strongly uphold the values of sportsmanship and reaffirm our commitment to fostering a positive and conducive environment among students and participants,” the authorities stated further.
The 19th edition of Udghosh-2023 witnessed participation of 2,200 sports enthusiasts, of which 2,050 were from various institutions, representing approximately 36 colleges from across India, the IIT-K authorities said.
“Over the course of the three-day event that concluded triumphantly, fierce competition unfolded across 17 distinct sporting disciplines,” they added.
